Letter to Parents

6th August, 2009.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

A special welcome to the parents/guardians of our new pupils at Ard Scoil na nDéise and we look forward to meeting the First Year students on Friday, August 28th. I enclose a copy of the school calendar for 2009/2010 which includes details of return to school for all classes.  Please keep the calendar for reference, and you will also find it on the school website.

New lunchtime arrangements

Our lunch break will be from 12.55 p.m. to 1.30 p.m. and students must be back punctually in the afternoon.

All First Year students must stay in school at lunchtime.

School will finish at 3.30 p.m. and 3.15 p.m. on Fridays.

School Office now open General Purpose Fee

The school office is now open each day from 9.15 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and 1.45 p.m. to 4.15 p.m. for payment of the General Purpose Fee, student insurance etc., avoiding students coming to school with large amounts of cash when school starts.  As you know, we rely on the General Purpose Fee to cover major expenses such as photocopying, use of school equipment etc. The cost is €60 for one student, €100 for two sisters, €120 for three sisters. The General Purpose Fee at Ard Scoil na nDéise has not increased for a number of years now and it may be paid all at once or by instalments.  We are sorry to have to ask for it at this difficult time, but several grants from the Department of Education and Science have been abolished, so we are receiving even less money to run the school.
Please notify the school secretary of any changes in addresses or phone numbers.

Pupil Personal Accident Insurance

I enclose insurance forms for pupils. The Board of Management requires that all students take out this insurance which costs only €5 per pupil for activities during school hours and €8 per pupil for 24 hour cover. Please bring the form to the office with the money. For more information about coverage with Allianz Insurance, click here.

School journal

All students must have the school journal which will be available from the school office and costs €8.50. Please return the signed school rules from your daughter’s new journal to the office.  This refers to all students in the school except First Years.
If your daughter is absent from school please write a note on one of the green pages in her school journal and sign it. This is necessary, because teachers must check the notes for the National Education Welfare Board.  Phone calls are not a substitute for notes. When your daughter needs a pass-out to leave school during the day, please use the yellow pages in the journal for the note.

Uniform

I would appreciate your support in ensuring that students wear the full uniform to school every day and I would ask you to read the section regarding uniform carefully when you are signing the rules in your daughter’s new journal.  As stated in the school rules, make-up is not part of the uniform.

Supervised Study

Supervised study will take place as usual, and forms will be available from Ms. Fox as soon as school begins.

School books

This year we have minimum changes in school textbooks and we encouraged all students to buy and sell secondhand.  We asked Junior Cert students to bring in books which would be needed by the First Year students. The school booklists for each year are on the school website www.ardscoildungarvan.com and when school starts we will try to arrange a further sale of secondhand books.
Students should have their name on all books, items of school uniform, jackets, equipment etc.

Summer Work

While students and teachers are enjoying their holidays a lot of work is being done in the school, thanks to grants received from the Department of Education and Science.  We have had attics and walls insulated, and I hope that this, combined with the fact that we have a new boiler in the Senior building, will help to bring down our oil bills a little.
Fire prevention measures have been upgraded in the Senior building, and at last we will have the old tarmac in the yards replaced. You will be glad to know that since the Summer Works grant this year was a 100% grant we will not have to fundraise for the work.

The Leaving Certificate class of 2009 and their parents are anxiously awaiting their results which we expect on next Wednesday, and we wish our graduates every success in the future. Best wishes also to Mr. John Cunningham, Guidance Counsellor, who will retire on September 1st.

I thank you for your support and I hope that students enjoy some Summer weather before they have to return to school.

Yours faithfully,
