Homework and Study Policy.

- Homework is an integral part of teaching and learning in Ard Scoil na nDeise. Homework consists of written work, and material to be learned, reviewed and revised.
- Homework is an area where the school and the home work closely together.
- Parents/Guardians are earnestly requested to support and monitor their children in doing their homework.
- Parents and students should be aware that all second level students are expected to do homework at weekends.
- Homework should be done in an environment that is conducive to learning. Televisions, radios, mobile phones and other distractions should not be located in study areas.
- Guidelines for the amount of study/homework for each year. Weekend revision for tests is extra.
1st Years 10 hours per week
(15 minutes per subject per night)
2nd Years 10 – 15 hours per week
(20 minutes per subject per night)
3rd Years 15 – 18 hours per week
(20 minutes per subject per night)
5th Years 15 – 18 hours per week
(25 minutes per subject per night)
6th Years 20 – 25 hours per week
(30 minutes per subject per night)
Homework for 4th Years varies with project work, various assignments and homework.
- The Purpose of Homework
- To reinforce class work
- To give practice in written work, e.g. essays, mathematics, etc.
- Every student will record homework given into her Homework Journal. This should be checked by a parent/guardian. Parents/Guardians may be asked to sign that the work has been completed.
- Early in their first term in Ard Scoil na nDeise the Guidance Counsellor will give help to 1st Years in how to approach study and present homework. This Homework support will continue during 1st Year.
- In their first few weeks in 1st year, students will have some time set aside at the end of class to start homework so that they are clear about what is required of them.
- Parents/Guardians of all students should monitor students’ homework performance.
- Aware as they are of the time recommended for study, teachers should co-ordinate the homework load and the timing of tests so that homework is fairly distributed. The placing of test timetables on the Teacher’s desk might facilitate the timing of tests.
- Homework should be thoughtfully selected and given. Where collected for correction it should be returned to students promptly. The amount given should be adequate.
- In assigning homework teachers will be mindful of students’ abilities and needs.
- Every effort by the student should be recognised.
- If a student has difficulties concerning homework she is encouraged to approach the teacher concerned to discuss the problem.
- It is very important that homework and assignments be handed up on time. Students who fail to hand in homework on time – unless there are exceptional circumstances – will not have their work corrected.
- Projects, Assignments, Portfolios to be submitted for State Examinations must be handed in at least one week prior to the DES deadline. Receipts will be issued by the teacher when work is submitted.
- Where there is a continuous failure to attempt homework, sanctions may be imposed.
